Shear beams are force transducers used to measure forces acting perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the sensor body. The force is detected via strain gauges (SG) and converted into an electrical measurement signal.

Shear beams are used, amongst other things, in test benches, platform, belt and container scales, in conveyor and lift technology, and in medical technology. They are also used for measuring force on levers or as torque supports.
The shear beam is designed as a cantilever beam with two measuring chambers and is manufactured from aluminium or stainless steel, depending on the measuring range. The special beam geometry enables precise measurement of the shear forces acting on it. Thanks to threaded mounting holes, the force transducer can be integrated easily and with a precise fit into machines and structures.
The force is applied via a separate threaded bore. This allows the shear beam to be mounted in accordance with the specific installation situation and the force to be measured to be precisely applied to the sensor body.
The strain gauges are arranged as a full strain gauge bridge within the measuring chambers and detect the deformation of the sensor body caused by the shear force. The application chamber is encapsulated with a highly elastic encapsulant, which reliably protects the strain gauges from mechanical and chemical influences.
To ensure high measurement quality, the bridge is calibrated to approximately ±0.01 mV/V in an unloaded state. Direct connection to a measurement amplifier allows for easy integration into existing measurement systems.
The shield of the supply cable is electrically isolated from the surface of the force transducer. This design reduces potential interference and ensures reliable signal transmission.
