Recommendations for handling VELOMAT force transducers

Force transducers and load cells are precision measuring instruments used to measure forces. A force transducer essentially consists of a spring element made of steel or aluminium. The applied force causes this element to deform within the elastic range of the stress-strain diagram. This deformation is used as a measured variable to indirectly determine the applied force in practical applications.

The spring element thus forms an essential component of the measuring system and has a direct influence on the measurement accuracy.

Avoid mechanical stress

Even though the external design of a load cell often appears robust and durable, improper handling and mechanical stresses can permanently impair its measurement accuracy. Impacts, blows, nicks or abrasions can damage the spring element or cause permanent deformation.

Particular care is required with load cells used, for example, as hinge pins or measuring pins in crane booms, connecting rods or similar structures. These must be able to move smoothly when installed. Otherwise, additional, undefined forces may arise which distort the measurement result – either only during the measurement or permanently.

During installation, therefore, the position of the load cell must never be adjusted by striking it with a hammer or applying any other direct force to it.

Strain gauges and encapsulated areas

In addition to the spring element, a force transducer contains a transducer that converts the mechanical deformation of the spring element into an electrical signal. In most cases, very thin film resistors, known as strain gauges, are used for this purpose. These are bonded to the measuring body at defined points and connected to form a Wheatstone bridge.

The bonding points of the strain gauges are encapsulated with an elastic substance. These encapsulated areas protect the sensitive strain gauges from mechanical and chemical influences.

The encapsulated areas must not be damaged or used to apply force. Otherwise, the function of the load cell may be impaired, which could lead to measurement inaccuracies or even the destruction of the sensor. Damage may also allow water, alkalis or other substances to penetrate, thereby causing further damage.

Handling the item with care will extend its lifespan

Handling force transducers correctly and with care plays a key role in maintaining their measurement accuracy and functionality in the long term. If mechanical damage is avoided and the instructions provided are followed during installation and operation, the service life of the force transducers can be significantly extended.
