Performance Level

Performance Level - EC - Machinery Directive

The EC Machinery Directive was passed in order to minimize the number of accidents that occur when handling machinery. Machines that fall within the scope of the directive may only be placed on the European internal market if the requirements are fully met. Only then is CE marking permitted.

The "DIN EN ISO 13849-1 Functional safety of machine control systems" was derived specifically for the mechanical engineering sector. This looks at the requirements for safety-related parts of control systems.

The level of safety is represented in the form of safety integrity. There are 5 performance levels available for this purpose. The performance level is a characteristic value for the reliability with which a control system fulfills a safety function. It is defined as the probability of a dangerous failure per hour. On a five-level scale from a to e, e stands for the lowest probability of a dangerous failure.

Performance Level (PL) EN ISO 13849-1Average probability of a dangerous failure per hour
a≥ 10-3 to < 10-4
b≥ 3 x 10-5 to < 10-5
c≥ 10-6 to < 3 x 10-6
d≥ 10-7 to < 10-6
e≥ 10-8 to < 10-7

The required performance level describes the reliability requirement for each safety function of the control system, which designers must determine individually as part of the risk assessment.

VELOMAT supports you in the safety-related integration of its own products into your projects.

We typically integrate safety-related features into our products as standard. Our two-channel sensors are therefore suitable for applications up to performance level e. The built-in calibration check can contribute significantly to increasing the diagnostic coverage. The use of this feature also enables single-channel sensors to be used in safety-relevant environments.

To complete load limiting functions, we offer a selection of sensor/electronics combinations that can be used up to PLd applications.

We also offer the implementation of customer-specific developments to obtain type examination certificates in accordance with current safety standards.
